Big Bang for sweet vacation in May

Group Big Bang will have a honey sweet vacation in the month of May.

YG president Yang Hyun Seok revealed that some time should be need for the members to recharge and hence for the whole of May, there will be no activities scheduled for the group.

Yang said in a phone interview, “Since their debut in 2006, Big Bang has not got the chance to rest properly. To make sure that they can make the best out of their Japanese promotions, they will have the whole of May to rest.”

Big Bang recently ended their promotion for their 3rd album title song ‘Sunset Glow’ last year. And right after that, member SeungRi into his solo promotion of the song ‘Strong Baby’ and the rest of the members did CF shooting and also did recording and working for their own music. All busy in ‘unseen places’. Also they will be staying in Japan and busy for their promotion in the months of June and July and recently they are also preparing for that.

Members DaeSung and SeungRi has already ended their MC taskes on MBC Music Core on 28th March for the vacation. But for DaeSung who has to be on SBS variety show ‘Family Outing’ and TOP who is doing filming for drama ‘IRIS’, the members will not be running for any promotions activities for that month.

This will be their first vacation or rather ‘recharging period’ for Big Bang in 3 years since their debut. Also for member GDragon, who is known to be the fashion icon, will also spend the time in May to go on a Europe vacation to study fashion. While TaeYang and SeungRi will study on dancing from famous dance choreographer in America.

2NE1 - 21st Century New Evolution

YG has officially decided not to use “To Anyone,”
since that is already being used by the artist 21 (To Anyone).
He said, “I’m so sorry to 21. We did not check in advance if anyone else had the name.” This is not something to complain about, btw.
An artist already had that name so it really isn’t fair.

2NE1 will be their official name.
“NE” stands for New Evolution,
and the “21″ also stands for the 21st century.
Therefore, 2NE1 will be the new evolution of the 21st century.

YG also said, “2NE1 will be introduced as a female group
with always having new challenges with a new form of music.
A YG rep said, “2NE1 will formally debut in May,
and have been preparing for 4 years for good songs and activities this year.”

Cool guy Big Bang: It’s good to be cool!

The new advertisement campaign for Hite Beer, ‘It’s good to be cool’ [outside performance] episode has been aired, and it is already stirring up interest. The concept of CF is Big Bang bringing back joy to crowd who are tired of boredom and tireness.

Big Bang members, who were spending time in boredom get into action when the siren rings. After driving in the city scene, they see a boring concert and people who are tired of hot weather. Big Bang members in blue firefighter uniform, give the crowd cool breeze of snow and passionate performance.

Crowds enjoy and feedback positively to the arrival of Big Bang and their concert. The scene where Big Bang members spray snow out of the hose and give an awesome performance is the highlight of this commercial. This represents Hite Beer’s goal of bringing back joy to customers. After the concert ends, Big Bang drinks Hite Beer with the crowd and enjoy the rest of the day.

Big Bang’s own song ‘So Fresh So Cool’ is used for the background music of this commercial. The chorus, ‘So Fresh So Cool, The time is now, Do it everybody! Everyone wants it, and can feel it’ is composed of addictive lyrics, fast beat and good melody amplifies the coolness of Hite’s new commercial.

This commercial was already in the centre of attention even before its initial airing; because the filming location was open to passing public, many fans have taken pictures and posted up online. There were already many virtual scenarios of the commercial and predictions.

Park Jong Sun, an executive of Hite Beer Marketing team said, ‘the new commercial definitely shows and collaborates the passion and coolness of Big Bang along with the image of Hite brand, and I wish many viewers can feel the excitement and coolness’.

YG will not change the name for ‘female Big Bang’

YG clears up about the matter of ‘female Big Bang‘ group 21 having the same name as another singer.

YG said, “It is such a shame that we didn’t thought of a singer with the same name. Even though we do not have any plans to change their name, we have plans to change the English name of ‘To Anyone (투애니원)’.”

“Though they have the same name, the meaning to the names are different. Hence we hope that fans will not misunderstand. Please continue to support the group.”

Meanwhile, 4-member group 21 prepares to debut in May

Netizens, “Oh no. ‘Female Big Bang’ to be called ‘21′, but isn’t there already a singer named 21?”

2 days back, it has been decided that ‘female Big Bang‘, a upcoming YG female group, to be called ‘21′.

But netizens are now becoming concerned as there is already a singer with the name ‘21′, who debuted in the year 2005.

There is a 23-year-old singer by the name of ‘21(To Anyone)’ who debuted with a ballad album on 22nd May with the single album ‘My Soul’s Weight’. The name came from the theory by the American medical studies that a human’s spirit weighed about 21 grams.

Netizens, “There is a singer with the same name. YG don’t know about it?”

YG’s new group ‘21‘ was named that way to represent the fresh music that group will produce, just like the age of 21. Also it has representation of the number 21 in the game of Black Jack.

With members consisting of Sandara Park, Park Bom, CL and Gong Min Ji, the group will debut beginning of May.

‘Lollipop’ placed as #1 on music sites!

Lollipop, a song sang by 21 (To Anyone), also previously known as ‘Female Big Bang’, and Big Bang was released on March 27th, and right after its release, it was placed #1 selling song on Cyworld and BugsMusic. Also, on Mnet, Melon, and Dosirak (all the sites where you can purchase mp3s), it was placed as #2, #14 and #14 respectively, and still rising.

YG entertainment said ‘because it is a song made for commercials, and not meant for any performances on stage, it is incredible that it has beat SonDamBi and EpikHigh on its day of release’. YG also added that ‘ever since 21 was revealed, there has been many number of interview requests, but they won’t be on public until their debut’.

The image 21 is going for is to be ‘unique’ and ‘different’ like Big Bang. Although they are girls, they want to be seen tough and be confident, and their music style consists of strong rap and lyrics. The producers for 21 include Teddy of 1Tym and G-Dragon.

The TV commercial for Lollipop will be airing starting from April 1st, and the full music video will be released on April 3rd.

Big Bang Q&A Excerpts: The Bromide Magazine

This is not an interview and the questions in general are pretty lame. But it's pretty recent and I like the fact that all members were given an equal chance to answer.

Bing Bang Talks About Their Past, Present and Future

Time flies so fast. They’ve grown from boys to men, from fresh newcomers to the country's top "idol" stars. We got curious what we have missed during that time period because we’ve been just watching them, mesmerized by their “perfect” charm. So we asked, "What are you thinking now?" And they gave us honest answers.

Q2. Before and after your debut - where (?) do you feel most clearly that your status has changed?

YB: At broadcasting stations.

Q4. Most “idol” groups are popular mostly among teenagers, but you have a much wider fan base. You are loved widely regardless of gender and age. Did you expect this from the beginning?

YB: No, we didn’t.

Q5. When was the last time you took an entire day off?

YB: Can’t remember (weep, weep)

Q6. Do you have plans to go beyond Big Bang and establish your own name in the future?

YB: Yes, I do.

(Interestingly, TOP was the only one who answered no to this question.)

Q7. Imagine you are in your 40’s. You look back on your Big Bang years. What do you want to be able to say about yourself then?

YB: “I did my very best.”

Q8. Big Bang is now a household name in Korea. Do you have a “target point” in your mind where, once you have reached there, you would say, “This is good enough”?

YB: No.

Q9. Suppose you could go back to before your debut, could you have made a different choice?

YB: Never!

Q10. There are hard-working types and naturally gifted types. Which one are you?

YB: We are all good at different things but work hard just the same.

Q11. Do you consider yourselves lucky?

YB: Yes.

Q12. We see many teenaged stars who care so much about their looks even when they are not on TV because they are afraid of what people might think. You are very fashion-conscious too. How about you?

YB: Getting dressed up in style is all good but I like natural, comfortable style.
GD: I don’t overdo it. I just like clothes.

Q13. You are loved not only for your music but also for your fashion. Every time you bring out a new album, many people are curious about your new look. What do fashion and music mean to you?

YB: Inseparable.

Q14. What are your major sources of information on fashion?

YB: Magazines, the Internet and shopping.

Q15. Who decides the overall style concept for the group?

YB: Our stylist.

Q17. When do you feel your life as a celebrity is hard?

YB: When I realize that I can’t go anywhere without our manager, I feel helpless.
GD: Always. But I know we can’t escape.
TOP: Never.
SR: Never. Everything's exciting to me.
DS: When I don’t have time to sleep.

Q18. Which member is the most different off the air/stage, than on?

YB: We are all pretty much the same.

Q19. As celebrities, you shouldn't be slaves to what the public say but you can't afford not to listen to them either. Are you relatively free from what other people think?

YB: Yes.
GD: Not really. We just try to be moderate.

Q20. What do you think is the biggest reason for your success?

YB: Different styles/personalities of members and hard work.
GD: Music.

Q24. You've had concerts and issued mini/regular albums in Japan. What are your plans in Japan?

YB: We plan to stay longer in Japan to raise name recognition.
GD: We have lots of plans but nothing’s been decided yet.

Q25. It's been recently known that DS and SR are terribly awkward with each other because they share a room and try to be overly considerate toward each other. How about other members?

YB: Close. =)

Q26. You are young. You are supposed to have dates, hang out with friends but you are too busy. What do you wish to do individually?

YB: Travel.

Q27. Most of you began your musical careers in your teens. Did you have firm goals of your own from the beginning?

YB: Not so much a goal as passion.

(YB, GD and TOP gave almost exactly the same answer.)

Q28. I hear that you plan to vacation in the US. What are you planning to do specifically?

YB: I would like to learn new things as much as possible.
GD: It’ going to be a vacation! I am going to rest doing nothing at all!
TOP: Literally vacationing. No work. Will take a rest.
DS: I won’t be able to go because of “Family Outing.”

Q29. Do you have plans to debut in the US?

YB: Not yet.

Q30. Unlike many other groups that emphasize conformity as a group, Bing Bang seems to stress individuality and differences among members. This makes it a bit hard to define your character as a group. What do you think about that?

YB: That’s true. And that actually allows us to do our best in our individual fields. I like it.

Q31. People seem to have very high expectations for Big Bang. Not just your fans but other musicians speak highly of you. Do you feel pressured?

YB: Yes, I do. =)

Q32. When you go home after a hard day of work, what do you do first?

YB: Take a shower.

Q33. When group members live together as you do, there usually is a member who plays the role of a “Mom.” Who is it?

YB: Every time we get this question, the rest of the members always say it’s me.
GD: Mom? Taeyang!
TOP: Taeyang!!
SR: Taeyang.
DS: Taeyang. =)

Q34. Success comes with a sense of accomplishment and many perks. But you also get too busy to have decent sleep and sometimes have to deal with unflattering rumors, which can give you a lot of stress. What's your greatest source of stress and how do you deal with it?

YB: Sometimes I get so tired I get headaches. It’s a bit simplistic but I sleep it off.

Q35. What was your best moment as a group?

YB: The Real Concert.
GD: Every moment after the debut.
TOP: The fact that people like us.
DS: When our song first topped the chart.

Q36. What’s your favorite Big Bang song ever?

YB: A Fool’s Only Tears.
GD: A Lie
TOP: A Good Man
SR: Strong Baby! I am kidding. A Lie.
DS: A Lie

Kim Bum and Kim So Eun Reunion

The incoming finale of KBS2TV Boys Before Flowers might leave some happy yet others sad that it's ending after almost 3 months.

본 아이에프 (Bon I.F.), the parent company for food products like Bon Bimbimbap, Bon Juk, etc has inked a contract with Kim Bum and Kim So Eun for the duration of one year to endorse their products. And naturally, they will reunite in the CF as a couple. Kim So Eun's character, Gal Eul had been working part-time at a porridge shop in Boys Before Flowers and was called Bom Juk which was in actual fact, a real Bon Juk shop. In the early stages of the drama, Kim Bum's character, So Yi Jung makes several visits to look for her.

A spokesperson for the company expressed, "We decided on both Kim Bum and Kim So Eun because of their fresh, youthful image. The immense popularity of Boys Before Flowers will also help to raise the awareness and positioning of our company's brand." Looks like Kim Bum and Kim So Eun will be meeting each other again pretty soon outside of school.

Jung Il-woo talks about acting, fame, and the future

Jung Il-woo: “Both Iljimae and I are maturing out of chaotic events”

Published March 17, 2009 // From 10asia.co.kr

In early 2007, when I [interviewer Choi Ji-eun] first met Jung Il-woo, he was the rebellious high school student Lee Yun-ho in the MBC sitcom Unstoppable High Kick [거침없이 하이킥]. Though he was a first-year university student, his high school uniform seemed to suit him better, his pure smile captured the hearts of the nation’s females, and, perhaps unused to the spotlight shining on him, he was a little reticent and seemed shy. Two years went by.

During that time, Jung Il-woo stepped down as a teen star and took one of the roles among many leads in the omnibus film My Love [내 사랑], and returned as Iljimae in the MBC drama Return of Iljimae [돌아온 일지매], on which he spent more than six months filming in advance. Time goes by quickly, but Jung Il-woo’s steps are not hasty. What are the thoughts of this 23-year-old young man, who became a top star as a 20-year-old youth, and what has he learned? That was the reason I wanted to meet Jung Il-woo again, who had become an adult so suddenly through Return of Iljimae. And this time, the Jung Il-woo I met was no longer bashful.

“I just grab some equipment and climb the mountain to go shoot”

It seems as though your voice has matured in that time.

Jung Il-woo: Thank you. [Laughs] My voice has changed. Because the character of Iljimae is very cool and calm, I’d been practicing adjusting my tone to suit him, and my voice changed unintentionally. I wonder if it’ll change again in my next project as I try to adapt to that character.

I understand that Return of Iljimae is heading toward its ending. How are things progressing?

We’re filming Episode 23. There are a lot of location shoots — we’ve been to Gwangyang, and I think we’re going once more to Wan-do. Gangwondo, Jeollado, Kyungsangdo… We’ve been all over the country. Because I can’t get cell phone reception when we’re shooting deep in the mountains, there are many times I’ve just turned it off entirely, and when we get to mountain paths that won’t permit cars, I just grab some equipment and climb the mountain to go shoot. [Laughs]

Filming began on Return of Iljimae last summer. How was your first encounter with director Hwang In-roi?

He asked a lot of personal questions, like how I spend my time these days, or how my family is.

Until that point, you had been preparing for director Lee Yoon-jung’s drama Triple.

Although I hadn’t signed a contract, I had been preparing for about four months. I was cast as a short-track speed skater, so I had been training seven hours a day.

It must have been intensive training. Did you record fast times? [Laughs]

Women national athletes record one lap around the rink in about 8 seconds. I skated about a 10-second lap.

Considering that, it must seem such a waste for all the training you put into Triple when you took on Return of Iljimae instead.

Not necessarily. I think of it as something that may come in handy some day. It was a good experience.

“I don’t think becoming a hero is something that happens in one moment”

High Kick’s Kim Byung-wook, Triple’s Lee Yoon-jung, Return of Iljimae’s Hwang In-roi… They’re all the top in their field. It seems you’ve been fortunate in meeting many talented directors. How do you feel about that?

To start with, all three share a somewhat short-tempered personality. They’re passionate and slightly quick-tempered. [Laughs] But when it comes to work, the three are at the top of their field, and really good people.

Did you read the original Iljimae comic before filming Return of Iljimae?

Of course I did. The first time, it was to get a sense of the character, then again to get a sense of the plot. As I read, I thought that although Iljimae is a hero, he wasn’t one from the moment of his birth. As a person, he’s pitiable and he’d undergone many misfortunes, but still he felt and changed a lot. I don’t think becoming a hero is something that happens in one moment.

Do you remember the first day of filming?

It was last year, July 23. We shot in Danyang, and the scene was of Iljimae training in the martial arts with his instructor, as part of his childhood years in China. It rained a lot that day, but the director just kept going, so we filmed all day. The suffering began from the very start. [Laughs]

Director Hwang In-roi is rather strict, and demands a certain level of acting from his actors. How did he draw that out while on the set?

He gets angry, saying, “Get it together!” [Laughs] But I discovered later that he doesn’t lose his temper with women. [Laughs] Particularly in the first portion, he told me to act not as Jung Il-woo but as Iljimae, which worried me a lot. In other words, that included not laughing while on set, or that if I hurt myself I shouldn’t make a big deal of it, but I took it literally and worked hard to become Iljimae. But lately, he doesn’t get angry much. He doesn’t give many instructions either; overall, he just says, “Try it like that.”

The character of Iljimae is extremely complicated and unique, and it’s not someone you can portray by following someone else’s example. He must be a somewhat difficult character to understand.

That was the biggest source of difficulty. Sometimes the director would tell me not to smile, sometimes he’d tell me to smile. But even then he would say to smile delicately, or “noncommittally.” [Laughs] Therefore, I think Iljimae was in the process of developing his character through episodes 13 or 14. Thinking about it, Iljimae wasn’t a hero from the start. He went through chaos and confusion and his character changed along the way, so I think I matured along with the drama.

“Iljimae is a bad guy to Wol-hee”

The drama contains a lot of action scenes. How was it, acting while incorporating martial arts from Korea, China, and Japan?

I practiced a bit of hapkido in the past, and prior to beginning filming, I spent a month in physical training. I trained seven hours per day, which included a 7 km run. Perhaps it’s because I enjoy exercise, but aside from when we had to work through the night without sleep, the action scenes themselves weren’t that difficult, and it was fun doing the wire work.

The drama between Iljimae and Wol-hee (Yoon Jin-seo) is just as important as the action scenes — what do you think of the emotions between them?

It was like that in the original comic too, but I think the woman Iljimae loves is his first love Dal-yi, who was beheaded and killed. To put it in a negative light, Iljimae may just be toying around with Wol-hee. [Laughs] That’s how I have to see it. Even after spending a few years together with Wol-hee, he talks with her when he’s lonely but then leaves, he brings up marriage but pushes that aside, suddenly shuts her away somewhere and doesn’t return. He’s a real jerk. [Laughs] That’s why Wol-hee even attempts suicide. The director says that Iljimae does like Wol-hee, but I don’t think so. Um, well… he does like her, but I don’t think it’s love. However, our drama is distinctive for not playing out those feelings in an extreme way, and I think that’s what the director wants. Even when the situation is dramatic, we don’t go to extremes.

In the original, one extremely significant part is the matter of Iljimae dressing in women’s clothing. I was very curious to see how the drama would play this out, and it turned out to be as a gisaeng*. [*female entertainer]

Acting is acting, so that part was fine, but wearing the woman’s hanbok itself was really difficult. The skirt tie runs across the chest and was pulled so tight that it was painful, the headpiece was heavy and uncomfortable, and the makeup took more than an hour. It’s an experience I wouldn’t ever want to do again. [Laughs]

When you weren’t shown full-body, it looked surprisingly good on you, although I’m sure it was rare in Joseon times for a woman to be 184 cm tall. [Laughs]

No matter how prettily we filmed it, there was no way we could avoid full-body shots. I was worried that it would ruin the effect if it looked that unattractive, but I was relieved that the response was, “It looks better than I expected.”

“In place of that cloud-like popularity that disappeared,
I gained more ambition for acting…”

As you enter the later part of the drama and Iljimae has become a skilled master, you said you’d have more leeway in showing his character. How are things now?

I feel somewhat stable. Actually, yesterday I was acting in a scene with Park Geun-hyung seonsangnim [teacher], who plays [evil minister] Kim Ja-jeom. He’s a really good actor and I’d heard he’s also pretty stern, so I had been pretty worried. The script had come out a while ago, so I had rehearsed that scene starting two months ago, and I even went to [veteran actor] Lee Soon-jae, who’d taught me a lot in my High Kick days, to ask him for a favor to get advice from him. But yesterday, Park Geun-hyung treated me so well, and we rehearsed fifty times. He went over each detail with me, one by one, and encouraged me saying that it was fine if I made mistakes and NGs. I was so thankful to him.

When I go to the filming location, I forget about ratings numbers”

Your image as Yun-ho in High Kick gave the impression that you enjoyed playing around, but it seems you’re closer to being a hard worker.

When I’m working, I tend to immerse myself in only that project. That way I don’t feel regret or disappointment once it’s over, so when it’s time to work, I like to put everything into that.

If you’ve changed at all through doing Return of Iljimae, what is it?

I think I understand now what acting is. That doesn’t mean that I’ve become a good actor, but that I’ve come to see what acting is, and to think of how things should be expressed. It’s not like I thought in the past, that it was enough to just read the script and memorize the dialogue perfectly. You have to become the character. The key isn’t to memorize the words, but to know what the most important point of that scene is. Actually, in the beginning of Return of Iljimae, I was determined to do well and put a lot of effort into memorizing every bit of dialogue, but Park Geun-hyung gave me the advice, “That way isn’t effective. If you focus on the most important lines, you’ll find it much easier.” Also, he said that if I speak the dialogue more slowly, it can come across less youthful, so I shouldn’t do that. In this way, learning from from Lee Soon-jae and Park Geun-hyung, actor-to-actor, is a different thing from learning in the director-to-actor relationship between me and Director Hwang.

As the main actor heading a drama, did you feel any pressure about things like audience ratings?

To be honest, I didn’t. Since we filmed for seven months before we aired, I’d forgotten about that. I was surprised that the ratings came back higher than expected for the first episode, but when I saw it on television, the pressure I felt was because of the many aspects of my acting that needed to be improved. Also, after the broadcast of the first episode, I talked on the phone with the director, who told me, “Don’t feel burdened if the ratings come out well, or feel depressed if they come out low. We will do what we do. We can make a drama that we will enjoy.” That’s why these days, even though ratings aren’t high, I forget about them when I arrive on the shooting location.

I heard that one of the things you discussed when you first met director Hwang In-roi was popularity.

After High Kick ended, seeing how all that popularity disappeared in one moment, like a cloud, I did go through a bit of a hard time. But it was my choice to take some time off instead of working, so I thought to myself, “If popularity can go up, it can also come down.” That’s why I told him, “I’ve decided to not be attached to popularity. If the project is good and I do my job well, it can always rise again.”

“I tell [Lee] Min-ho to enjoy the immense popularity of Boys Before Flowers”

Looking back now, your popularity in your High Kick days really was tremendous. What memories remain with you now?

It’s like a dream. [Laughs] When I was on High Kick, shooting was busy and my schedule was full, so I couldn’t really feel it that much. I could get a feel for my popularity when going out to eat and people recognized me, and also when I went to Chonan to shoot the music video for “오죽했으면” [by ballad singer Gu Jung-hyun] and saw that people had totally crowded the road. But it was so hectic that I couldn’t enjoy the situation, and I was a little confused whether it was High Kick’s Yun-ho or me that they liked. Of course, I think it was really great that I got to experience that once. I don’t particularly miss it.

Your close friend Lee Min-ho is experiencing a similar thing with his role in KBS’s Boys Before Flowers. As the sunbae [senior] who experienced this first, what do you tell him?

When you develop popularity, things happen to you that you’d never thought of before, and sometimes Min-ho asks little things like, “What am I supposed to do in this situation?” But actually, that’s something I asked Min-ho back when I was doing High Kick. [Laughs] I just tell him to enjoy this now. Also, all of his actions are going to attract notice, so it’s a good idea to be careful. Naturally, Min-ho’s already doing pretty well with that. Right now, I want to congratulate him as a friend, and in the future, I think we can spur each other on in healthy competition. More than anything, it’s a huge support to have a friend to be able to talk with in difficult times.

As you continue acting and become more famous, what do you think you gain and lose?

There are a few things from my time on High Kick. For one, I had no personal time and couldn’t go about freely. But now, those things don’t bother me. This is my life because this is what I’ve chosen, and therefore I don’t think of it as having lost anything.

As an actor, what do you think are your weak points?

In the past, it was my enunciation. When I was doing High Kick, I was pretty bad at articulation, and I worked hard to correct it. I still get hung up on it a few times now, but it’s much better than it was then. Now what I strive for is to have a diverse range of facial expressions. Truthfully, Iljimae doesn’t have a lot of different expressions, but even the one phrase “looking coldly” can reveal many different subtle emotions. Because acting is an art through which you express one’s truth, I want to be able to convey more emotions, whether it’s through a facial expression or a look in the eye. Although I think I’ll need to age more to attain more force. [Laughs]

“I really don’t think acting is something that can be done halfheartedly”

If that’s the case, do you have something you’re grateful for, something you were born with that helps in acting? [Laughs]

Um… I don’t think so. It’s because acting isn’t something to judge based on doing any one thing well or badly; it’s based on how well you can embody and express the character you’ve taken on. Really, I don’t think acting is something that can be done halfheartedly.

What’s the hardest thing you’ve had to do in your life?

I’m sure there are a lot of things, but I don’t keep them bottled inside. There are a lot of instances that seemed truly dark and painful at the time, but once I passed that point, they became nothing. When I’m working, the work is what troubles me, and when I’m not working, I’m troubled because I’m not working. [Laughs]

When you’ve been working, have you ever felt afraid of something, or lonely?

I have. I did back with High Kick and I do now. Even when I’m working on a project, I have had times when I sank into a slump and felt extremely lonely. But those things work out eventually with time. At some point, there’s a definite turning point. And if it doesn’t appear, I seek it out. I’d felt a little depressed the past few days, but after acting with Park Geun-hyung, my feelings have suddenly improved. I try to relieve stress in ways like that.

Compared to two years ago when you were Yun-ho in High Kick, do you see yourself or your future more clearly?

Not clearly, but my attitude toward work has become somewhat more relaxed. In the past, for instance, I would be impatient when choosing projects, and if what I saw right in front of me didn’t appeal to me, I didn’t do it. But now, I’d like to take a more thoughtful approach to my work and the decisions I make. Also, when making a decision, I should put my feelings first. If I end up working on something I don’t 100% want to do, the results won’t be good. Because Return of Iljimae is a project I wanted to do so badly, I’m working that much harder.

Much farther down the line, what kind of project do you think Return of Iljimae will mean to you?

It’s a project that helped me realize a lot of things, as both an actor and as a person.

What qualities should the leader of an idol group possess?

* The Oldest

(omission)

* Representative: I can talk and represent the group
It is essential that the leader can clearly represent the group and each member. (omission) Big Bang’s G-Dragon is the one who meets up to this standard.

* Potentiating the Uniqueness: ‘My group is different’
Often the member who can portray the character and the uniqueness of the group becomes the leader. The main example is G-Dragon of Big Bang. The fact that G-Dragon, who can compose, write lyrics and produce tracks, potentiates Big Bang’s quality as ’skilled dance group whom can produce own music’. Their music plays a key role in differentiating Big Bang from other idol groups.
* The Order of Acceptance: Experiences count!
Sometimes, it is important to count how long it has been since the member joined the company, or the duration spent as a trainee. For example, G-Dragon of Big Bang debuted when he was 8 years old as ‘little rula’, and became a trainee of YG entertainment when he was in grade 6. Another example is Sunye from Wondergirls who became a trainee of JYP when she was in grade 6.
The reason why they could be the leader of their groups, is because they are the one who understand the system of idol groups the most. The leaders are the one who can relate between the group and the company.
Of Course, you cannot be a leader with only one or two of these qualities. Usually the leaders of idol groups of present day possess almost all of these qualities to fulfill their duty as leaders. The most important, and the most basic quality is undeniably the understanding and care that can heighten the harmony between the members.

American boybander remakes Taeyang’s song

Drew Ryan Scott - Dating Game

Taeyang - Sinner

Drew Ryan Scott wrote a song called “Dating Game” and used Tae Yang's “Sinner” beat behind it.

Drew, from new LA based boyband Varsity Fanclub, probably acquired the song from the original composer Gabe Lopez, who works with Red Queen Media, composed the Taeyang song, and also worked with Varsity Fanclub on their debut album. Compare the versions:

Drew’s “Dating Game”:

" This story begins one evening,
I was walking around with my feelings out
I was looking for time to recover
I was searching for a friend not a lover

On the first date, you were all in my face
On the next date, I was getting a taste"

Taeyang’s “Sinner”

"i let out my breathe to the sky
the red sunset must have entered my eyes
i keep rubbing them, but it doesn’t go away
i try to hold it in, but it keeps hurting and hurting

i try to erase you and erase, but it still feels like you’re by my side
it feels like you’re the only thing i can’t forget"

BIGBANG: NII winter CF || A Know-how for Success from Big Bang :: Go Beyond Your Limit

A Know-how for Success from Big Bang :: Go Beyond Your Limit
translated by 코코마탑횽 @ bbvipz.com
tiptop.mireene.com

Recently, Kim In (CEO of Samsung SDS) gave Big Bang’s self-development book “Shouting to the World” to 300 of his executives. In the strategy meetings, he told them that “current economical crisis is like a war-zone’, and presented the book as a ‘war-survival-kit’. He also said, ‘be crazy about work, and go beyond your limit’.

The subtitle, ‘13140 days of Challenges’ of this book refers to the sum of their prepation days. Big Bang members have shed sweats and tears, 12 hours a day for several years.
Their success story has been written on top of their sweats, and the productivity of their name was derived from going out of the box.
In 2007, Big Bang rose above like ‘Lies’. You could hear the chorus ‘I’m so sorry’ from every street, and their later songs such as ‘Haru Haru’ and ‘Sunset Glow’ were also hits. Even in 2009, ‘Big Bang craze’ is present. Not only in the music industry, but to fashion, books, and character merchandice, the brand, ‘Big Bang’ is constantly evolving. Yang Hyunsuk, CEO of YG entertainment told the press that in 2007-2008, Big Bang has earned over 4,700,000,000 won (40.7 million dollars).
On January 30th, 31st and February 1st, the concert, ‘Big Show’ was on. It was a ‘warzone’ trying to get a ticket, and has set a record breaking number of 52,000 people on a single concert. By the ticket sales, goods and sponsorship, they earned another 4,000,000,000 won (4 million dollars).
Their self-development book, ‘Shouting to the World’ was sold over 300,000 copies in the first month. If you calculate this as MSRP (manufacturer suggested retail price) 15,000 won, it is already 4,500,000,000 won (4.5 millon dollars). On TV advertisements, they are on for cell phones, electronic products, clothings and drinks (over 8 advertisements), worth several million dollars.
You cannot describe them without record (music) sales. They have released 9 CDs and 5 Live CDs, counting over 1.1 million copies, resulting in 10 million dollars.
Big Bang’s official character, ‘Bangs’ was released just 2 weeks ago, and over 1.5 million people have visited the blog sites. The character will be produced into animation, games, and stationary products. Fila Korea, which introduced ‘Big Bang Limited Edition’ in last December said ‘the customer age level dropped from 30-40 years old to 10-20 years old’ after the release of Big Bang Collection. Also, the sales rate doubled, and the products sold over past 3 months are worth 4.5 millions .
The steps of Idol group writing self-development books, making fashion lines are derived from the indescribable charms of five boys, who have gave everything for singing and dancing. Looking like everyone else, they say ‘you could be just like us’ as if they were our own friends.
Frankly speaking, Big Bang has dominated the fashion trend; because of them, street brands rose above the surface, hats/caps, shawls, high-top shoes and accessories were sold like there was no tomorrow.
Big Bang difers from other idol groups in their ‘uniqueness’. They have thrown away the same uniform-like clothing, dances and songs. When they are up on the stage, they say, ‘let’s go party’.
Usually, the curve of CD sales of an idol group usually peaks in the beginning and slows down. However, Big Bang is different. When their new CD is released, their old ones also experience an increase in sales. Every month, they have released single albums after their debut, and with the new CDs, they make people go search for the previous ones. In second week of March, Hanter-chart (takes records sale statistics), there are 10 of their albums on the ranks.
Idols used to be the crave of only boys and girls. However, Big Bang prouds of broad fan spectrum. Older generation feel familiarity when they see Dae Sung singing ‘Look at me Gwisoon’. Men or women, young or old, everyone likes them. It is essential to have that charm which embraces every generation.
Professor Kim Nando of Seoul University says, ‘From their birth, they were incorporated with Netizens. With communication of Netizens, the group was finalized, and grew with accessibility. Big Bang is a major example of web marketing. If you can read Big Bang, the culture icon, you can see the success story. Be true and friendly, but go beyond your limit and smash the pre-existing box’.

Style & Cover Story] Fashion Icon, G-Dragon :: Red pants, Green Suit.. Everything becomes a trend on him.

htm_2009031918081330003800-001

It is difficult to describe G-Dragon (21, Kwon Ji-Yong) in a word. He is the leader of an idol-group from YG entertainment, and known as ‘perfectionist Ji-Yong’ or ‘Jingyo’ among the fans. He is good at not only lyric-making but also in composition, and is also a fashionista who makes everything from scarves from sunglasses he put on as major triends. He can pull off the extremes of lovely bang hair to shocking mohawk hair. To summarize, he is way too powerful as an idol, but too lovely as a musician.

G-Dragon became a member of ‘Little Rula’ when he was 5 years old (his mom made him so), and grew to be a grade 6 rapper in 2001, with hiphop-style baggy pants and tilted baseball cap. He was noticed by Yang Hyunsuk of Seotaji and the Boys, and became a trainee of YG Entertainment. For the next 6 years, he trained and sang thousands of times, and learned how to dance with repetitive fallings. His goal was clear: to be singers like ‘JinuSean’. By finishing through the last step, ‘Big Bang Real Documentary’ in 2006, G-Dragon was able to complete the puzzle of ‘Big Bang’ with Tae Yang, TOP, Daesung and Seungri. In August of 2006, Big Bang successfully debuted, and not even after 3 years, they are the most famous idol star in Korea. G-Dragon is known as the ‘genius idol’ among the fans, as the style icon, and the master of lyric-making and composition. In one of the cable TV program, he was ranked first as ‘the celebrity one wants to possess’. How did G-Dragon’s charisma develop?

His stylist, hair designer, manger, photographer, choreographer all say that he’s a born-celebrity, but he also had the time of a flower bud before being a full-blown flower.

How did a five-year old boy, Kwon Ji-Yong become the best idol-star G-Dragon. Style& reveals it now.

“In the beginning, he frequently went to Dong-Dae-Moon and Yi-Tae-Won”
- Stylist, Jieun (29)

Was Gu Hye-Seon and Se7en’s manager before, and became Big Bang’s manager since 2007. Since three months ago, became Ji-Yong’s personal manager.

“I have a personal memory with Ji-Yong. Not too long ago, I was going to resign due to personal reasons. I told the company about it, and it was accepted. Ji-Yong was in Japan for work, and called me as soon as he was back in Korea. He said, ‘You can’t do this to me, you can’t never quit’. Without hearing my reasons, he just hung up. I was startled at first, but it got to me that this is his way of showing his affection. Hence, I ‘could never quit’ and am still working (smile).

People say that he’s ‘cold’. It is something he created himself, because he constantly realizes himself as a team’s leader and recognizes the responsibilities. For example, when Big Bang has a stage performance, there are the 5 members, 4 stylists and a manger team moving at the same time. At this time, Ji-Yong is at the centre of decision making. So, he has to work strong and think sharp. However, in everyday life, he smiles a lot, plays a lot, likes to eat yummy food and has a huge interest in fashion, just like his peers in 20s.”

“Used to dance so fiercely, split his pants many times”
- Choreographer, Lee Jae Wook (31)

In YG in 1990s, and was in a dance team for JinuSean, 1Tym and Se7en. Became choreographer since 2005.

“Ji-Yong was a born dancer. He could feel the beat, had a sense of style, learned fast, and knew how to apply the learned skills. Before Big Bang’s debut, when i first met the members, I thought his dance ability was the best. Although the first is Tae Yang (since Ji-Yong has lyric making and composition to take care of as well), he still collaborates ideas the most for dances. The choreography for ‘Sunset Glow’ and ‘Last Farewell’ were filled with ideas of Ji-Yong. Ji-Yong and Tae Yang danced the most fierce; whenever they are in tighter clothing, they split their pants the most.

Before debut, they used to practice over 14 hours a day. As seen in the documentary, when the choreography is complete, it’s Ji-Yong’s turn to fine-tune it with the members. Even now, to determine the entries and so on, Ji-Yong decides with the members.”

“Mohawk-inspired hair style was Ji-Yong’s idea”
- Hair Designer, Kim Tae Hyun (38)

Was Ji-Yong’s hair designer since his trainee days.

“During the performing days, he frequents the salon almost every day. Even when the members change their hair styles often, they get treatment every other week; so their hair stays healthy. Ji-Yong has the best skin complexion just like a baby. He rarely puts up makeup, unless he is on the TV.

The styles of five members cannot be the same, one cannot outshine the others, the hair colours must go well together… The more the members be fashion icons, the more I need to pay attention and study.

When a title song is decided, the stylist decides an overall concept for styling, and I create the hair styles for each member. Ji-Yong likes to change himself often.

The ‘duck’ hair style (the one he did during Lie performances) was created with partial extensions on his bangs. His hair was too short to tie up, but he really wanted it. The Mohawk-inspired hair was decided because the clothings were too normal. Even back in 2001 (when Ji-Yong first came to him for hair styling), he wanted to be different from everybody.

Ji-Yong becomes lovely with bang hairs. When he puts on the Mohawk-inspeared style, his expressions also gets stronger. It has been almost 10 years since we’ve known each other (Kim calls the members as ‘babies’). However, everytime he is in front of the camera, he shocks me. He knows how to show off both the clothing and hair style, and portrays it with his face and body expression. How can you not like someone like this.

He is warm-hearted, and know how to treat people nicely. He’s someone who moves the side dish trays I cannot reach while eating.”

“Can change expression depending on the clothing in a split second”
- Photographer, Lee Jung Woon (29)

Came to YG in 2004, was Se7en’s photographer. Recently worked with Big Bang with various projects.

“It was in 2004 when I first shoot Ji-Yong. He looked like a little smart off any street; he brought little props for the photoshoot. I thought he was overdoing it, but the result was spectacular.

Ji-Yong has good front face. Strong looks, various expressions can be obtained by photographing from the front; and I usually do. Since the first encounter, I could feel his strength and pride through the camera lens. That look still stayed till now, although the feel of it changed.

Before, he used to pose with things others put on him. Now, regardless of what he is wearing, he knows how to express himself freely. For example, if he was waiting for a black suit and a colourful suit arrives instead, he doesn’t lose his cool. He just changes his shoes that match ith the suit, and changes the hairstyle according to the suit. The wit cannot be represented without pride and strength. His pros and cons is that he has a lot of desire (to be better) and has too much fire and passion. Sometimes, when the photoshoot is finished, he wants me to take photos with his own ideas. Sometimes, i want to control him as a photographer (smiles).”
